Sukhu pushes for natural farming growth in Himachal

CM Sukhvinder Sukhu advocates for expanding Natural Farming in Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu emphasized the importance of expanding natural farming in the state during a review meeting of the agriculture department's schemes on Tuesday. He highlighted that products grown using natural farming methods will be branded and marketed under unique trademarks. This initiative aims to help farmers receive better prices for their produce.

New initiatives for natural farming

The Chief Minister directed the development of a comprehensive system for the certification, packaging, and marketing of natural farming products. He announced the establishment of a special laboratory in the state for soil testing and certification of these products. This initiative is part of the government's broader focus on improving the agricultural sector, which engages about 70% of the state's population. Sukhu assured that the agriculture department would be strengthened by filling vacant positions, addressing the staff shortage.

Support for farmers and infrastructure development

Sukhu also discussed future plans, including integrating irrigation schemes in collaboration with the Jal Shakti Vibhag, JICA, and SHIVA projects to maximize benefits for farmers. The government is committed to providing sufficient funds for the remodeling and repair of traditional kuhals (irrigation channels). Additionally, cold storage facilities will be established based on the specific needs of each district, and silos will be constructed for storing wheat and maize under the JICA initiative. These steps are part of the government's efforts to boost the rural economy, a key focus in the 2024-25 budget.
